Restoration Timber

September 14, 2013 by

Dan and his San Francisco-based boutique agency, Sp3d, was commissioned to design an identity and marketing package for a reclaimed-wood company. Most of the wood comes from old barns, or is pulled out from riverbeds that were once used to float logs to wood mills. The resulting product is very refined, old-growth wood that has been preserved by cold river water. Dan was inspired by turn-of-the-century art and craftsmanship for Restoration Timber. The Shaker movement also inspired the art and design of the brand—a metaphor for seasoned, high-quality wood.

Dan and his San Francisco-based boutique agency, Sp3d, was commissioned to conceive, design, and produce a 30-second television spot for “When Ants Invade” which alerted people to the dangers of home pesticide use. Pesticides kill bugs—and everything else! The PSA and billboard campaign was commissioned by the Bay Area Stormwater Management Agencies Association (BASMAA). Concepts that promoted responsible insecticide use were presented on storyboards. Sp3d created the TV ad by blending photo compositing and 3D animation—and won a Telly Award!

Negativland

September 14, 2013 by

Negativland is an experimental music and sound collage band which originated in the San Francisco Bay Area in the late 1970s. Negativland has released a number of albums ranging from pure sound collage to more musical expositions.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, they produced several recordings for SST Records, most notably Escape from Noise, Helter Stupid, and U2. Negativland were sued by the band U2’s record label, Island Records, and by SST Records, which brought them widespread publicity and notoriety.

Dan started out as a rabid fan of Negativland to being a contributing satellite member of the band for the past 20 years. Dan’s work is primarily graphic design and art that reflect the fantastical made-up sound collages that Negativland is known for. Dan has done countless projects for Negativland, ranging from CD packaging, posters, logos, book covers and more recently, fine art—only a few are shown here.
